“I want Sanju Samson to have every opportunity” – Ravichandran Ashwin

Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recently spoke about star wicketkeeper batter Sanju Samson not having consistent chances in the Indian team, saying the 28-year-old is “obviously going to be trending” when he’s not part of the team is playing XI.

Samson was not included in the Indian squad for the 2022 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup despite playing consistently with the racquet. He did not feature in the recently concluded three-game T20I series against New Zealand and many fans and pundits expressed their disappointment at his non-selection from the XI.

In a video shared on his official YouTube channel, Ravichandran Ashwin discussed Samson’s affair and said he would like the wicketkeeper-batter “to be given every opportunity”.

“Obviously for his (Sanju Samson) talent, he’s going to be trending when he’s not playing. I want Sanju Samson to have every opportunity. In fact, I even said I’m looking forward to seeing him play as he’s in exceptional form at the moment and playing brilliantly,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin went on to talk about how Hardik Pandya handled the issue of Samson’s non-selection very well. In particular, when the press asked Pandya about Samson’s non-selection, he replied:

“He knows it’s nothing personal. That has to do with the situation. I’m a folk person. So if someone needs me, I’ll be there for them. Everyone knows my doors are always open for them to come and have a chat with me if they feel anything at all because I understand how they are feeling.”

Ashwin said that Hardik Pandya replied to a question about Samson in Thala MS Dhoni style.

“He (Samson) is a very exciting player but since we chose a different combination we couldn’t play him now,” said Hardik Pandya. In fact, the press asked him why he wasn’t playing Sanju Samson. Hardik Pandya replied in thala dhoni style. He said the door to my room was always open, any player could come and talk to me.

“It was very good to see him speak with such clarity. In fact, I don’t know if he meant to say that in the Thala Dhoni style because we all know that Hardik is very close to Thala Dhoni. And he had previously said that he learned a lot from Thala Dhoni. He handled a tricky question that’s always trending on social media beautifully. So kudos to Hardik,” Ashwin said.
